Here's a question for you. Let's say you found a long abandoned town and could buy it cheap. If you wanted to make that town a place where Transgender people could live in peace. What would you call the town? So far there have been two suggestions. "Transville" and "Transformations". What would you call such a place? I'd love to hear suggestions as would some people looking at this feasability.
:)

Paradise city (FYI: This is not a reference to The Guns n' Roses song Paradise City, well maybe if you consider the meaning, but anyway yeah.)

Umm 'Ghetto'
Think about it... a segregated place for 'transgender' people to live!...{My answer BTW is part serious-part joke, which is which I'm not too sure]

As much as I love those names would you really want such an obvious name in which trans people could be grouped. It is nice to think that there is a place where people like us can live in peace and safety. However if you name this place such an obvious name as "Transville" or "Transformations" I feel u would inviting the wrong group of people to visit such a place. I would love to live in such a town but personally I belive that such a place should be kept on the "Down Low" rather than advertised. I love the idea of such a place though. Perhaps you should name it "Vacuus Censura". Which is latin for "Without Judgement". Kinda fitting in my view. Best of luck and thank you for everything.

Laura , I really like the one you gave me earlier in our talk. :) NoJudgement, Texas. :) I think it really sings about who we are without divulging to the Homophobic people and bringing us unwanted trouble. And it is my belief this project will bring our community together and be a very close knit family (as if we ain't already) And being a united family is one of our missions , is it not , among the many missions we have?

You make a very valid point. Calling a town trans anything would just invite people to trash it. It's just reality. I am inspired by your LAtin suggestion. How about calling the town "NoJudgement"? I love the name because it speaks volumes. It's also our major policy on the site. It's a statement that invites people who don't judge and disinvites though that do. "What's in a Name indeed". This says it all. We may name a street after you :).

Around New Year's i posted that this would be the "Year of the Transgender". This site is going to be the focal point of that. While there are Transgender Organizations that are poitical and are fighting for our legal rights tooth and nail there are No organizations fighting for our basic needs. Needs like health care, Education, jobs, housing and suicide prevention. Two staff members here, Karen and Sharleah have taken in hoemless transgender people despite being short of funds themselves. Four years ago we were the first organization to provide transgender suicide prevention. In the beginning of the year I stated that I wanted to establish an emergency fund for our users. Already steps have been taken to establish Laura's Playground as a non-profit organization. After that I intend to start writing grants to bring in funds for our community.

A plan has been drawn up which will address the basic needs of all of our community members for years to come. It's not just a pipe dream. This is actually happening right now. Step 1 is in the works and step 2 started yesterday with the purchase of a long abandoned town (no buildings). The town needs a name to be given to the state and thanks to you Steph I think we just found the perfect name. While we were working on housing, jobs and education needs we realized services would be scattered across the country. Since a base needs to be established an abandoned town makes lots of sense. It's the perfect place to build an inclusive community in which to live work and play in peace. Imagine a place where you could walk down the street without harrassment no matter what you looked like, where coming out is encouraged. A place you could simply be yourself. Land would be cheap enabling us to build our dreams. Institutions would be established by us. We would be pioneers.

Building anything worthwhile takes time, even dreams. The basic steps are being put into place. From that point on the community can build from there with proper plans in place. If I've learned anything in 4 years is that the transgender community is full of beautifull hearts and minds. There is nothing we can't do if given the chance. I am older and my health isn't great. If though I can help setup the basic structures that the community needs to propel itself forward I will have done well. This is my dream.

I can't reveal the location just yet but it is bought and paid for. Reality shows that telling a state that you plan on establishing a place for minorities is not wise.
While the town would be open to everyone (can't discriminate) it would get little funding if state bigots hold the purse strings. They really don't have to worry as it won't be in their neighborhood. So please hold out hope. We have heard you and are working on the problems. Solutions are on the way and faster than you think.
:)
Laura

PS Whoops we have our first leak. Sharleah, you sure you want to reavel where it is?

PPS OK It looks like we are revealing it after all. The town is presnetly a ghost town on a river with high banks called Bryant Station. Here's the link
http://www.texasesca...ation-Texas.htm . The name will be changed to "NoJudgement" Texas.

Laura, to my knowledge , it is about 60 feet from the water to the top of the banks. And , I have been told a many a time , if you can think it or dream it, you can make it happen. Once we get this town up and running, it is my plan to do a repeat with another Ghost town. If we got to have dreams, we may as well shoot for the stars.

First need the basics set up like water electrical sewage or septic and financing arrangements etc. Then construction possible from there. So far one unpaved road. Bridge can only carry pedistrians so far so needs upgrading. So lots to do. The important thing is it has begun.

Everything significant in existence began with a dream. Those like the Wright Brothers, who believed people could fly when most of society refused to believe - we fly without thinking about today. Those without the dream often fail to believe the dream, and even make fun of those who believe. Mr. Fulton faced such abuse. Fulton's Folly they nicknamed his attempt to make a ship that used steam -- but his vision came to life in spite of blinded arrogant people who refused to see beyond their own narrow minded views. Once science fiction told of stories of going to moon and living on space stations - it was thought to be fairy tales. Yet some believed it was possible and did something about their beliefs. Men walked on moon and men and women have worked on the space station. Great things begin with an idea, a vision -- then it takes work, determination and a refusal to believe the negative people who refuse to believe it will not come to pass.

I know little now: I don't know the size of place. I don't know if the bridge has to crossed to have access to the property. What I do know is a dream is turing into action -- to me that sounds like the Wright Brothers, Fulton, and NASA. So many other things began as a dream or a bit of science fiction. Ever see a cell phone before you bought one? Yes, it was a communicator on the orginal version of Star Trek.

I just have a quick question, where is the money coming from? Also how much is needed? Starting up a town would require a large amount of money and it would need a lot of teamwork and participation... unless you're a billionaire.

Also is the name going to be "Nojudgement" or "Vacuus Censura"? I like VC a little more since Nojudgement sounds like a funky name for a town. Judgement City sounds a little better but you something more like Judgeless City. I don't know. I've never really been good at making names.

Ummmm, I do not enjoy being the breaker of any bubbles. But this is not an Apil Fools Day farce. This just so happens to be a life long dream becoming a very real reality. Throw negative vibes all you wish, but this little country girl is seeing her dream take shape and provide a loving community for all my brothers and sisters . A place where we all can live safe and free from the bigotry and homophobia in this already cruel world. My pursuit will not be daunted by negative thoughts. Even you will have a place if you so desire. I say these words out of my love for all of you.

I have two questions.

1. Why would we voluntarily segregate ourselves from the world?

2. Wouldn't a town like that be the target of hate crimes?

I have to agree with Alicia. This seems like a ludicrous idea to me, no offense...

Segregation will just encourage abuse elsewhere. It'd be like making a town for people with red hair or something. And it's basically like slapping a "come here with guns" sign on it to any transphobics.
